– When a Fan Photo Contest was announced Monday, April 2nd on the City’s Facebook page, it was not anticipated at how successful it would become by the contest deadline at noon on Thursday, April 5th. 28 photos, reflecting the beauty of Eustis, were submitted with a total of 613 votes cast.

Eustis to Implement Alternative Residential Solid Waste and Single Stream Recycling Collection on June 4, 2012
Eustis, FL
– In January, the Eustis City Commission agreed to move forward with an alternative level of residential solid waste and recycling collection service that will save citizens approximately $2.00 per month and increase opportunities for recycling. In addition, Waste Management, the City’s franchise hauler, will provide both garbage and recycling roll-out containers to each household.

Arbor Day Foundation Honors Eustis with Tree City USA Recognition, Growth Award

– The City of Eustis was recently recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit organization, as a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry. It is the 20th year Eustis has earned this national recognition.
Eustis also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program. The prestigious Growth Award honors environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.

– At the Organizational City Commission Meeting at 7:30, January 3, 2012, one of the Commission’s first actions was to elect a new Mayor and Vice-Mayor to serve in those positions for current calendar year. Commissioner Susan Hooper, Seat 4, who served as Acting Mayor in 2011, was elected by the Commission to serve as the Mayor for 2012. Kress Muenzmay, Seat 2, was elected to serve as the Vice-Mayor of Eustis for 2012.

Eustis Improves Emergency Medical Response

– When Eustis firefighters and city officials cut the ribbon last week, they weren’t opening a fire station, but marking an important advance in the life-saving efforts provided by the department. The City of Eustis, which had provided Basic Life Support services with trained emergency medical technicians, made the transition to Advanced Life Support services last Friday.

– The City of Eustis and the Eustis Finance Department was recently awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting with the 9/30/2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). This award is given by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada and was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.

Firefighters from Eustis, Mt. Dora, Tavares Train for Water Rescues

– Drivers traveling the scenic route around Lake Gertrude this week were slowed by what initially appeared to be an emergency: almost a dozen firefighters, in the water and on a boat, lifting a patient from the water. Fortunately, the scenario was not an actual emergency, but part of a cooperative training program between the Eustis, Mt. Dora and Tavares fire departments.
