Eustis Improves Emergency Medical Response

Eustis, FL – When Eustis firefighters and city officials cut the ribbon last week, they weren’t opening a fire station, but marking an important advance in the life-saving efforts provided by the department.  The City of Eustis, which had provided Basic Life Support services with trained emergency medical technicians, made the transition to Advanced Life Support services last Friday.

“This is the culmination of more than two years of work,” said Eustis Mayor Michael Holland.  “It’s been a goal of mine and the other commissioners for some time and it’s great that we were able to work with Lake EMS to make this happen.”

The switch from Basic to Advanced Life Support required upgraded equipment and extensive training for

employees.  Advanced Life Support is provided by paramedics who are trained and certified to administer life-saving drugs, treat heart conditions and manage all pre-hospital care for patients.  A firefighter/EMT who attends paramedic courses can expect to endure fifteen or more months of classroom, clinical and evaluation training.

“We received a grant for the equipment and sent six of our firefighters to medic classes,” said Eustis Chief Rex Winn.  “We are very fortunate to have the full support of the Public Safety Director, City Manager and our Commissioners to improve our level of service for the citizens.”

For city leaders, providing Advanced Life Support is another step toward cooperating with local organizations and municipalities to improve services while saving taxpayer funds.

“We’re sharing the costs but our citizens receive the full benefit,” said Eustis City Manager Paul Berg.  “This service allows Eustis and Mt. Dora to coordinate fire and emergency medical response services seamlessly and to provide more complete and efficient services to our citizens.”

For Mayor Holland, who also serves as a local representative on the board of Lake Emergency Medical Services, the greatest benefit will be the lives saved.

“I’ve said since the first day I took office that public safety is my first priority,” said Holland.  “This cooperation between Eustis and Lake EMS will save lives in my hometown.  And that’s what matters.”
