City receives GFOA Certificate of Achievement

23rd year of recognition for Excellence in Financial Reporting

Eustis, FL – The City of Eustis and the Eustis Finance Department was recently awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting with the 9/30/2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR).  This award is given by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada and was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.

The receipt of this recognition demonstrates the professionalism of the City's Finance Department and displays a high level commitment by the City to position itself to even be able to compete for the recognition. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and management.

It sends a message of fiscal stability and responsibility to the financial community that deals with the City. This recognition has significant effects on banking relationships and debt issuance.

A tremendous amount of work is extended for a local government to become eligible to compete for this recognition. It also requires a great deal of ongoing effort and dedication for the City of Eustis to annually sustain the certification as it has for the past twenty-three (23) consecutive years.

Eustis Finance Director Jim Myers stated “even though we have been able to sustain this award for twenty three consecutive years, it continues to be a major challenge and accomplishment.  Financial reporting requirements increase each and every year and with the employee reductions that we have seen and the increased responsibilities that the remaining employees have had to take on, it clearly demonstrates the professionalism and commitment of our employees in the Finance Department and throughout the City of Eustis”.

A formal presentation of this award will be made to the Eustis City Commission at a regular meeting in the near future.  The 9/30/2010 CAFR is available and can be viewed at the City of Eustis website under the Financial Information section.
