Eustis, FL
– The Eustis Historical Museum & Preservation Society will welcome members of
the Lake Eustis Sailing Club for a roundtable discussion of the Club’s early
years. The presentation, which will be held on Thursday, July 28th
at 7:00 pm, will include Jane Hartge, Bob DeWitt, Frank Keenan and others who
took part in shaping the Sailing Club into the organization it is today.
Hartge, whose late
husband, “Captain Dick” Harge, built sailboats on the shores of Lake Eustis,
will describe her husband’s influence on sailing in the lake and describe how
her family loaned their property for the club’s early years. DeWitt, Keenan and
the others will share the later history, including the efforts to move the club
to a permanent home on the North side of the lake.
“Captain Dick
basically brought sailing to Lake Eustis,” says Sam Chapin, the Sailing Club
member who has organized the event. “Now, the Club is almost sixty years old,
so this is a great opportunity to get the history recorded firsthand.”
For Eustis
Historical Museum President Timothy Totten, the presentation is a way to
highlight a local institution.
“We host area
historians for our regular monthly meetings,” says Totten. “But having a
roundtable will let us bring out more history, as one person helps trigger
someone else’s memory.” |
