Amazing Race for Charity Presents Proceeds from Race
EUSTIS, Fla. (May 24, 2018) For Timothy Totten, the director of the Amazing Race for Charity presented by Florida Cancer Specialists, the best part of the race is distributing the proceeds from the event. "We had a record haul for this race," says Totten, whose group has put on the charity event for five years. "We raised a record $32,810 for ten local charities while having way too much fun."
The race, which pits teams of two on a 5+ mile course to complete 20 or more individual challenges, culminated this year in a special event at My Favorite Things in downtown Eustis with a night of check presentations and race videos. "This event takes more than 300 volunteers and sponsors to make it work," says Tammie Vinson, the board member in charge of volunteers. "This is our opportunity to give out the checks and let them see the videos of the other parts of the race they didn't get to see."
The 2018 recipients included The Open Door Homeless Resource Center, Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation, Ruth House, The Early Learning Coalition, Alee Academy, Abracadabra Foundation, The Educational Foundation of Lake County, and Bay Street Players.
In addition to the money raised from sponsors and race registrations, the group also presented a check for $2,565 to the Humane Society and Strut Your Mutt. Those funds were donated by race participants who were given the option to donate $5 to the cause to skip a challenge requiring them to sort ten pounds of dog food into different shapes and colors. Racers also collected more than 1,500 school supplies, which were donated to Eustis Elementary School on race day.
For Rebecca Randall of Ruth House, a transitional shelter for women and children in crisis, the Amazing Race for Charity is a chance to share her organization's message and secure much-needed additional funding.
"This impact of this event is greatly felt," says Randall, whose group has volunteered for all five years of the race and this year received more than $2,500 from the proceeds. "We've already applied to volunteer for next year!"
In just four years, the Amazing Race for Charity has raised more than $135,000 for 25+ local charities. More than 150 teams have already registered for the 2019 race, which is scheduled for April 6th in Eustis.
