Photo: Commissioner Susan HooperCommissioner Hooper was born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1947 where her dad ran the printing department at Purdue University.  She has 2 children, 3 step children and 5 grandchildren. Her family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio when she was in the third grade.  Her dad worked for the IRS there, but took a job with Martin Marietta the following year hoping to be transferred to Orlando, Florida.  After a short stay in Baltimore, Maryland her family moved to Winter Park, Florida in 1957.  She survived being in four different schools in the fourth grade.

When Sue was in the eighth grade, John F. Kennedy ran for president and sparked her interest in politics.  Later she learned that her mother’s father ran and won a seat in the Eleventh Senatorial District of West Virginia.  Coming from a very political family, she attended several political rallies with her dad.  She was able to shake President Johnson’s hand.  She was wearing a button that said, “If I were 21 I’d vote for Johnson” and carrying a poster that she made saying, “You can pull my ears if I can shake your hand.”

Commissioner Hooper has held offices in many organizations starting as president of the Teen Vets, VFW Post 2093 in Orlando.  After high school Sue married and moved to Ohio.  There she went through the chairs of the Preschool Mothers Club in Zanesville.  Sue was first vice-president, vice-president and president of that organization.  During that time, Sue served on the executive committee of the local Christian Women’s Club.  Years later, in 1992, Sue and her husband moved to Eustis.  She fell in love with this city and wanted to get involved.  First she joined the Eustis Historical and Preservation Society and served as recording secretary.  In other years she served as assistant treasurer and as president.  She joined the Eustis Art League and served as treasurer and as assistant treasurer for the Eustis Business and Professional Women’s Club.  Sue served on the Eustis Code Enforcement Board for 6 years and was chairman when she resigned in 2004 due to her husband’s declining health.   Sue recently resigned from the City of Eustis Historic Board when she was elected to the Eustis City Commission. She is presently a member of the Golden Triangle Republican Women’s Network and is the recording secretary for the Lake Federated Republican Women’s Club.  She volunteers for the Bay Street Players as well as being a season ticket holder.  Sue still belongs to the Eustis Historical & Preservation Society and belongs to the North Lake Business and Professional Women’s Club.  She belongs to the First Baptist Church of Leesburg.  A church that stands out in the community with so many desperately needed services for underprivileged people.

Sue has had a real estate license since 1982 and a real estate broker’s license since 1984.  She holds a GRI, CSP and ASP designations in this field.  Her experience includes general real estate, new home sales and property management.  She has owned and operated two real estate offices with her husband, Milt Hooper.  They served as co-chairman of the education committee of the Sales and Marketing Department of the Home Builders Association of Mid-Florida in 1991.  Among her duties she coordinated and supervised the Certified Site Agents courses for the CSP designation.  Currently, she is a broker-sales person with Coldwell Banker Tyre & Taylor Realty, Inc.

In 1997, at age 50, Commissioner Hooper graduated with honors and earned an AS degree in Interior Design Technology.  Sue has owned and operated Inspired Designs since 1995 and has been an allied member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) for as many years.  She decided to combine her real estate and design careers and became an Accredited Staging Professional in 2005 thus earning the ASP designation.

Last year, Commissioner Hooper became the Lake County Volunteer Community Coordinator for the FairTax, a national grassroots movement to change the Federal income tax system of the United States.  This is bill HR25 in the US House and bill 1025 in the US Senate.  She is passionate about helping citizens live better, more productive lives.

Sue walks her “kids” Ada Bonaparte and Rip A. Bonaparte for half an hour through the city each morning.   On this, her “prayer walk”, she thanks God each day for the privilege of living in the United States of America, in the state of Florida and in the city of Eustis.  Love of God and Country is her motive to make this a better place for all people.
