Eckian was born in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in the nearby town of Brookline, MA.  He attended the public schools in Brookline, MA.  He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Yale University, and his M.D. degree from the New York University School of Medicine.

Commissioner Eckian served for 2 years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria, teaching basic sciences to students training to be agricultural field officers.  He also did 4-H type projects with the youth of the town where he was assigned, and coordinated the installation of a large culvert to relieve flooding in the town.

His medical practice has included full-time Emergency Medicine at the Waterman Hospital, followed by a Family Practice in Eustis, and then 20 additional years as a scientific and medical consultant to the pharmaceutical industry.

Additionally, Commissioner Eckian has been an active investor in stocks, bonds and real estate for over 40 years.

Commissioner Eckian studied religion and Scripture for 2 years at the Institute for Christian Studies in Orlando, Florida, earning a Diploma in Lay Preaching.  He subsequently served a full, three year term on the Board of Directors of the Institute for Christian Studies.
